2014 CONTEMPLETION

"Contemplation" is a painting dedicated to my wife and her experience living with me in Hong Kong. This particular artwork features pieces of MDF board cut into varying widths, composed into a long canvas that stretches over three meters. The cityscape of Hong Kong, abundant with towering skyscrapers, is depicted within this canvas. Amidst these structures, a pencil sketch (made entirely of elipse circles as her hair is quite curly) of my wife's silhouette blends into the mountains of Italy, symbolizing her dreams of her homeland while feeling confined within the urban jungle.

The painting does not reference any specific part of the cityscape at first glance. Instead, it captures the duality of her mind, connected to two vastly different places—Hong Kong and Abruzzo region of Italy—each with its unique culture and aesthetics. This duality reflects her life after marrying a Hong Kong native, living between two extremes and adapting to two distinct cultures that, despite their differences, share similarities.

After many years, I now reside in Italy, frequently returning to Hong Kong for work and family visits. "Contemplation" thus serves as a time machine, linking these two countries and encapsulating the essence of our intertwined lives."
