2012 TENSION SERIES

In the TENSIONS series of artwork, I don't think I have a particular brief on how I created them. It was a project that approaches the second year of working in Beijing and I wanted to represent the five seasons, four of them bring the normal spring summer autumn winter and the fifth one about my feeling of pollution that is engulfing Beijing during that time. At that particular moment I was questioning what a painting can be and I was again approaching a research on casting shadows with protrusion and fabric stretch over the actual artwork itself. The cavities are are cuts by tension off the fabric which ultimately creates this ellipsoid hole once the blade is angled correctly. I was simply obsessed with how the shadow can be so different during day and night cycle and the colour of each of the painting just showcase what my feeling was during seasons of course the pollution being the darkest of them all and I was wondering in my mind how this process can be reversed but ironically Beijing nowadays is far better in the pollution issue then when I was there back ten years ago. The tension series does not define meaning or interpretation in my own consciousness but the audience can define it via their own wish even though there is a brief in my minds guidance on creating them it is not a solid foundation on what the message can be conveyed to any audience seeing this set of paintings.
