Nearly 3 years ago I met by chance Giancarlo in my wife’s hometown village of Roseto in the Abruzzo region of Italy. At the time we just have our child Leonardo and we are still coming to grips with our change of life. This very stylish gentleman, who is a spectacular designer in his own right,  showed me his moulded Bow ties from his company Gigoloart and I loved it. It is so Italian; a sense of mischievous irony seems to be his calling in executing all his creations. After I left that trip, I saw an abundance of posts on this social media showing the spectacular scenery of his hometown, especially the beach life be it in the vibrancy of summer or the more unforgiving barren moments of the winter months.

This made me design the Sunset finish especially for him. The gradient paint is hand finished by me after lots of trial and error and the bottom fluorescent red layer is mixed with sand to recall the beach morphing into the spectacular sunset famed in the Abruzzo region. It seems Griancarlo awakens the romantic side of my design and I hope he can shad a tear with me if he feels touched by this special version just for him.

SUGO founding members, Kevin and Giulia, wanted to ask themselves what a lamp design can actually be. When is a lamp not just a lamp, but also a sculpture? Could it have some family features to it? Can it evoke motion and emotion when it is inanimate? These questions lit up a light bulb in their heads and the OMINO lamp was born. The design is a symbolisation of everyday human activities in any given situation. The lamp sculptures are made simply by bending tubular steel into shapes that depict symbolic movements of the human body. An opaque glass sphere emitting an LED light represents both the human head and mind. OMINO questions the traditional representation of lighting as simply an object for illumination and fuses humanoid figures into a dynamic design. The initial collection consists of six ‘buddies’ or ‘family members’. When the OMINO lamp is placed inside a space, you and the designs become occupiers of the same space and the humanoid sculptural forms become more than just lamps.
