I have never had the fortune to meet Michelle in person. Who hails from the romantic city of Paris and with family ties to Central America. As per usual we only briefly have a chat on WhatsApp and I interviewed her on 2 questions to attain some inspiration on her special version of Omino as per usual of my practice. I ask her what her colour of choice is and the moment she remembers the most in her life. She instinctually tells me the time she spent with her father in Niagara Falls and Blue seems to linger in her mind. This initiated my journey to explore a technique in painting I termed erosive colour blotching. To mimic a sense of liquid dynamics in her Omino a highly reflective chrome silver coating is applied as a base coat then 6 shades of acrylic blues are sponged on before specks of water are overlaid on the applied blue paint to “melt” it aways into random cavities to mimic liquid flow. To add a final touch inspired by my Asian heritage, the base is splashed on as a half circle Chinese calligraphy to recall the ancient fable of the Circle of Life. The meaning of Omino Falls is about embracing water as life, no matter what circumstances and turmoil one faces, we need to attain our flow of being with the evolution of change in the world around us.

SUGO founding members, Kevin and Giulia, wanted to ask themselves what a lamp design can actually be. When is a lamp not just a lamp, but also a sculpture? Could it have some family features to it? Can it evoke motion and emotion when it is inanimate? These questions lit up a light bulb in their heads and the OMINO lamp was born. The design is a symbolisation of everyday human activities in any given situation. The lamp sculptures are made simply by bending tubular steel into shapes that depict symbolic movements of the human body. An opaque glass sphere emitting an LED light represents both the human head and mind. OMINO questions the traditional representation of lighting as simply an object for illumination and fuses humanoid figures into a dynamic design. The initial collection consists of six ‘buddies’ or ‘family members’. When the OMINO lamp is placed inside a space, you and the designs become occupiers of the same space and the humanoid sculptural forms become more than just lamps.
