PLASTIC ARCHITECTURE
Date
2018
Location
Portugal
This project is a collaboration with the Hong Kong startup ECO-BRICKS, where we envision an outdoor shading enclosure that utilizes recycled plastic bottles, heat-molded into brick-like formations. The design is inspired by European classical arch architecture, exploring the duality of classical geometrical structures using the latest sustainable technology.
We envision this project as a gathering hub entirely made of recycled plastic bottles, addressing the rising consumption and recycling challenges of discarded plastic bottles. Covering approximately 8,000 square meters, the project features various heights of arches composing a building where the community can gather for group activities and educational purposes.
Additionally, the floor covering will utilize molded plastic bricks, maintaining the singular material usage throughout the entire project. During nighttime, specific illumination will be employed to create a unique reflective hub, inspired by the grandeur of classicism yet entirely made from discarded materials.
Through architecture, we aim to explore new ways to utilize material science, distancing ourselves from classical polluting elements such as marble, wood, or concrete. We seek to explore the possibility of recycling discarded waste into various building formations that can withstand weather and pollution, contributing back to the planet.
