PLANKTON Lamp
Date
1999
Location
Italy
Inspired by bioluminescent plankton in the deep ocean, we designed this lamp to resemble an abstracted version of our source of inspiration. At the back of the lamp, soft fiber optic strands exude light, while the body is made of frosted acrylic that glows in the dark from a single light source at the lower part of the design. The lamp can be scaled from a simple desk lamp to a larger floor lamp, with each fiber optic strand capable of altering the illumination index of the light.
In this project, we aim to move away from conventional lamp designs, focusing instead on creating a sculpture that questions its functionality. Additionally, the larger version of the design can also act as a seat, allowing the user to sit on its geometry, as if downscaling a human being into the microscopic elements of plankton.
