In the heart of Lan Kwai Fong, the vibrant nightlife district of Hong Kong, we were commissioned to design a lounge bar spanning approximately 400 square meters. This area, renowned for its abundance of nightlife and dance venues, is celebrated for its creative design executions and attracts global DJs who come to showcase their talents.

While studying the movement of electronic synthesizers on a car audio screen, we experienced a eureka moment. We envisioned constructing blue verse screens with rotating lighting, programmed to sync with any tunes played by the DJ. Unlike most discos that use lighting to pulsate with music, we decided to approach this idea with shadows that danced to the rhythm. This is why the main lounge area features numerous louvre structures, strategically placed at varying distances, with lighting cast onto the louvres to create moving shadows that respond to the music.

In the bar area, we experimented with carbon fiber cladding, pioneering this planning system in Hong Kong. One of the private rooms serves as both a snooker and conversation area, where we recycled hundreds of PVC pipes, bending them with a heat gun to create an organic enclosure. At the main elevator entrance, we used leftover PVC piping to create a textured wall that seems to move with the pulsating lighting, enhancing the dynamic play of shadows.

This project is all about movement, and we aimed to steer clear of the clichéd aesthetics of a typical nightclub, which is often dark and filled with colored lighting.
