Hutong describes traditional living areaswithin narrow alleys in Beijing. The term hutong induces an old Beijing wherebicycles were abundant, and industrialization was sparse. In recent years, thenumber of hutongs has dropped dramatically due to the rapid growth ofmodernization in China. SUGO remembers these charming and chaotic structuresduring the few years the firm's founders spent expanding their design consortium. It is with this sense of romantic nostalgia that this design was born. The 3Dmetal matrix printed structural, researched by a small manufacturer in Italy,is based on the abstracted masterplan of the San Miao Jie Hutong; one of theoldest remaining hutong in Beijing. The crystals represent each hutong housesand their unique spatial planning within the city grid formation. The design isentirely customizable as different heights andcolours crystals can be replaced freely which also alters the reflectivity andillumination index of HUTONG, SUGO believes that we will be seeing a greatmagnitude of changes and displacement with any cities past architecture and webecome a metaphor in HUTONG that initiate the changes of our landscape.
